HETEROPHOBIA: YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT…

By the Rt. Revd. Robinson Cavalcanti*

With the homossexual agenda assuming tsunami proportions the cultural revolution surges forward. First the Academy, then the media, NGOs, churches and now three main spheres of power: executive, legislative and judicial, have succumbed to it. One could highlight the decision (political not scientific) to exempt homosexuality from the roll of pathologies, the case widely made for the legitimacy of homosexual practice, the revision of the concept of marriage and indeed the revision of school books on sex education. In the media homosexuality is “normal” and TV soaps and series invariably portray homosexual characters in a positive light. In the churches there have been ordinations of practising homosexuals.

So called “gay pride” marches are an annual fixture the world over (the largest being in the Brazilian city Sao Paulo), and receive public funding from cities, states and federal governments. Countries like Spain and Brazil and a whole host of non-governmental and governmental organizations (“For a non-homophobic Brazil”, for example) are lobbying for the gay agenda to be included in the “Human Rights” roll of the UN. In the USA, respected voices from the black movement and its historic campaign for Civil Rights are openly protesting against the homosexuals attempt to appropriate ideologically the legacy of that memorable chapter in North American history.

Alarmingly, there is an aggressive campaign against all who would oppose this agenda. While those who perpetrate physical and moral violence against homosexual people are rightly viewed as criminals, lamentably, it seems that those who simply “love the sinner but condemn the sin” may be tarred with the same brush. Social scientists have already analysed a new cultural phenomena known as heterophobia: the hate, rejection, ridicule, intimidation, and systematic condemnation of whoever disapproves the gay agenda or reaffirms normative traditional heterosexual values.

After the detention of ministers in Denmark and Sweden for preaching against the legitimacy of homosexual practice, and a lawsuit against a Pentecostal church in Recife, Brazil, the English parliament (which already passed a “civil partnership” law with practically the full equivalence of matrimony) is currently debating a new Law against Discrimination, which looks to criminalize speaking, preaching, writing or acting in a manner deemed contrary to the homosexual agenda. In practice, this would mean for example, in the case of a church hall rented to the general public, one would no longer have the legal right to withhold that space from a group of homosexuals. Here in Brazil well financed lobbies are knocking on the door of Legislative Assemblies and even National Congress to approve (as has occurred already in some cities) laws that criminalize those of us who while fulfilling our civil duties and paying our taxes, insist on afirming the traditional cultural values of Christianity – or any other religion for that matter – on this issue. It would not be demagogy, hysteria or paranoia to affirm that a new cycle of violation of human rights and religious persecution is nigh…

In the meantime, enemies “from within”, the revisionists and post-modern liberals seek to occupy key posts in churches, denominations and ecumenical organizations, colaborating with the State in pro-gay movements to bring violence against the orthodox. It’s clear that the negation of the authority of Scripture as normative in matters of Doctrine and Ethics, the negation of the exclusivity of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, and the exclusive role of the Church as agent of the Kingdom have made way for the “Open Eucharist” or “Non-confessional Baptism” for non-Christians, and for the incorporation of priests from other religions into church pastoral teams. Already, some churches hold youth events where keynote speakers are witches; already, statues of Buddha or Shiva are appearing on some cathedral altars, and already, some are condemning as “politically incorrect”, “arrogant” and “imperialist”, our Lord’s words “I am the Way the Truth and the Life, no-one comes to the Father except through me.”

Analysts infer that these unfortunate advances which are shaking the very foundations of civilization are a consequence of the omission of Christians, be it through accomodation, fear, or mere capitulation to the spirit of the age. Psychotherapists, in our country, are scared to death of having their licenses removed by Regional Councils or by the Federal Council which prohibit them to attend professionally those who voluntarily desire to overcome their homoerotic orientation, and accuse a handful of brave and faithful Christians who are standing up to the gay agenda of being “radical” or “extremist”.

We are very close to a tragically farcical situation, a true theatre of the absurd, where heterossexuals are being forced into silence. For militant heterossexuals the principle of isonomy, equality in Law, will disappear. The choice will be shut up or be banged up, silence or moral destruction. Christians everywhere must engage in the search for and the breaking of the bread of liberty – we must rally politically and hold our governmental representatives to account.

The blood of the martyrs is calling to the heavens. May men and women who stand firmly on the rock of Christ continue undeterred in the face of the evil of the age, in or outside the Church, and may they resist in obedience to their Lord while running the risk of martyrdom. Those who are faithful unto death will receive the Crown of Life.
