Yong Ping Chung: “It is a mistake to think that by pleasing the world we can gain it”
Archbishop Yong Ping Chung, former Chairman of the Anglican Consultative Council and retired Archbishop of South East Asia, is visiting the UK in from October 12-19. He is speaking to the Church of England Evangelical Council, at the Reform Conference, St Marks Battersea Rise, St Peter’s Harold Wood and at a gathering from five dioceses in North West England. He was interviewed about the Anglican Communion on his recent visit to Canada
“As long as the Anglican Communion still honours God, honours Jesus Christ and belongs to the Church of God, then our hope is bright. If the whole Anglican Communion, for some reason, someday just suddenly denied that Jesus is the only way and denied the authority of the gospel, I think we have no hope.
And this actually has been demonstrated in the last 20, 30 years in the churches in this area. They used to be very strong missionaries and biblical. But nowadays, a lot don’t even agree that Jesus is the only way. They try to say all sorts of things.
I come from the most multi-religious area, I would say, in the world. The other religious leaders will respect you if you have a clear understanding and obedience to what your belief is. It is a mistake to think that by pleasing the world we can gain it. You may fool the people for some time, but in a little while, they will ask: ‘You don’t believe anything. Why should I follow you?’
