Cathedral bans Carey as a “divisive force”
The former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey of Clifton, has been banned from one of the oldest cathedrals in Britain after accusations that he has become an “instrument of disunityâ€.
Lord Carey, who has become a champion of orthodoxy in the Anglican Church since stepping down from the top job in 2002, was due to speak at Bangor Cathedral, North Wales, in February. The Dean of Bangor, the Very Rev Alun Hawkins, is understood to have imposed the unprecedented ban because he feels that Lord Carey has become a “divisive force†and has been “disloyal†to his successor, Dr Rowan Williams, who was born in Wales.

Anglican Mainstream comments:”If this is true it is a very worrying development . Does it indicate that the deep divisions within the Anglican Communion have now entered these islands ? Is it another instance of the intolerance of those who are so loud in their calls for tolerance ? Does it indicate hostility in the Diocese to the ministry of orthodox Anglicans? Certainly it is likely to dismay Lord Carey’s many friends in Wales in general and Bangor in particular. “
Andrew Carey’s blog comments:This report needs very little comment or interpretation. The intolerant decision of the Dean, the Bishop of Bangor’s effete response, are there for all to see.
