Bishop of Rochester calls for independent study of Islam
The Bishop of Rochester responded tonight to the Prime Minister’s speech on anti-terrorism
The Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, born in Pakistan to a Muslim background, warned of a danger in being “reactive” and called for an independent study into every aspect of Islam in Britain.
Dr Nazir-Ali said: “We need to stand back a little to see what is really going on. Unless we have an objective study of Islam, made available for intelligence purposes, the Government is never going to know what to do.” On the Prime Minister’s reference to teaching about the Muslim contribution to Europe, he said people needed to learn also about the Christian contribution to European culture and civilisation.
He said: “Unless people have a moral and spiritual standpoint, they will not be able to counter the moral and spiritual force of Islam and even of this kind of Islam. It is not just a political matter.”
