Christianity: its nonnegotiable core

The symbol for Christians around the world is not a lowly manger, representing Emmanuel, the Incarnation, the here-and-now, the immanent. Neither is the symbol a gold crown, representing Christ’s reign before time and his coming, rightful rule over all (his) creation.   Rather, the symbol for Christians is a Roman gallows upon which hung scourged and naked the innocent Son of God.  And to bring it even closer  home, let us be aware that Jesus’ body now bears the marks from that crucifixion:  those are the wounds which bring healing and life to you and me if we but ask.
