Myanmar Cyclone Appeal - Letter from Archbishop Stephen of Myanmar
The devastation caused by the cyclone in Myanmar (Burma) has been graphically portrayed in the news media.
The Archbishop of Myanmar writes as follows:
As you know many people from the delta region including our church members dramatically become the victims of the recent storm. To help them effectively the CPM have formed a relief Committee on 7 May with 19 members including Archbishop, retired Archbishop, an assistant bishop, the provincial general secretary, the secretary of the diocese of Yangon, some clergy and lay persons etc.
As first step the committee divided three groups of people and send them to the three areas which were badly destroyed by the storm. They will come back on 15 or 16 May and report us the exact situations. Then we will carry on next steps.
Please pray for us and help us.
In Christ,
++Stephen
Archbishop

Crosslinks Mission Agency in the UK has a long history (since 1924) of involvement in Myanmar. More than 50 mission partners were in Myanmar prior to the Japanese invasion of 1942. Some 25 went to Myanmar following the Second World War until they had to leave in 1966. We have continued to seek to serve the churches there, especially of the Anglican Church of the Province of Myanmar: sponsoring students for theological study; regularly supporting the work of the Diocesan Bible Schools (there are 6 Dioceses) and the Mary Chapman School for the Deaf (with more than 300 children); and making grants to purchase motorcycles for evangelists or to help in the translation of the Bible into the Khumi Chin language. Many of these continue and you can see details and support these ventures (link). More recently we have also been involved in training Christian leaders in the vital task of interpreting and teaching the Bible, faithfully, clearly and relevantly (link).
We would now also like to offer the opportunity for churches and individuals from Great Britain and Ireland to contribute towards the relief and rebuilding that follow on from the cyclone. We have contact with Anglican Christians in Myanmar and they are carrying out an assessment of what and where help is needed. We have made secure arrangements for financial help to get to the Anglican Church. This is obviously not a budgeted item but Crosslinks will support the costs of transferring funds, from the General Fund.
Crosslinks is now able to send your gifts to the Anglican Church in Myanmar for use in relief and reconstruction.
