Nigeria: Anglican Church Calls for Accountability

The Anglican church has called on leaders at all levels to be accountable for their actions while in office.
This was contained in a communique issued at the first session of the seventh synod of the Diocese of Abuja and made available to newsmen in Abuja.
The communique, signed by Most Rev. Peter Akinola, primate, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) said the effort to be accountable would sanitise and build confidence of the citizenry.
It said leaders at every level of government should live in the fear of God continually for " except the lord builds Nigeria, all our labour will be in vain".
"Every Nigerian should partner with God in the role of nation building, appreciate and patronise made in Nigeria products as a way of supporting the growth of the economy," it said.
It added that the fight against corruption should be accompanied by aggressive effort at alleviating poverty.
On issues of development, it called on the government to reinvigorate public institutions to avoid endless resort to similar establishments abroad by the leaders.
"Problems of under-development and resultant crises in the Niger Delta region and other similar spots in the country should be addressed through institutional commitment of government at all levels.
"All revenues appropriated in the 2008 budget at all levels of governance, should be effectively and sincerely monitored to ensure actualisation of proposed programers meant for development purposes," it said.
It stated that government should intensify effort at making the rural areas more attractive to the youths and facilitate large scale mechanised farming as a matter of urgency to avert food scarcity.
On issues of seven-point agenda, it said, everybody should collaborate with the government and with the fear of God for it to be achieved.
"In order to achieve the seven- point agenda, which expectedly will place Nigeria among the top twenty most developed nations of the world by 2020, Nigerians, individually and corporately need to seek the face of the lord," it said.
For the church, it advised that all Christians should learn to take every step of life’s journey with Christ who is the foundation and builder of life.(NAN)
