Tens of thousands of Christians have been displaced and forced to live in refugee camps as violence continues in the Indian state of Orissa.

Violence against Christians erupted in late August, after communist extremists murdered a well-known Hindu leader. Hindu extremists exploited the crime by stepping up attacks on Christians. Since then, more than 70,000 believers have been displaced and are living in refugee camps.

Todd Nettleton, a spokesman for Voice of the Martyrs, says the stories coming from the persecuted Christians are heartbreaking. "We pray that the government will be able to put a stop to it, that they will be able to regain some form of control. But in the meantime, thousands of our Christian brothers and sisters have had to flee their home; they’ve had to flee their villages," he explains.

Nettleton points out that many Christians have lost contact with family members. He urges fellow believers to pray that God would provide for the needs of these displaced Christians and their families and also use their testimonies in times of trial to draw nonbelievers into fellowship with Him.
