Wholistic care: Abuja Diocese Wellness Centre established
Church underscores the importance of healthy living
St. James’ Anglican Church Asokoro in Abuja Diocese on Sunday dedicated a Wellness Centre which is to provide free medical tests for all the parishioners. This came on the heels of the consistent campaign and teaching by the Diocesan and the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Revd. Peter Akinola, for all church members to imbibe and maintain practices of healthy living.
The Chairperson of the Health Project Committee, Dr. Philippe Momah who quoted from Psalm 92:12 said that the setting up of the Centre was borne out of the Scripture. She noted that good health cannot be divorced from good relationship with God and encouraged the church members to always go for periodic medical check-ups to guard against silent-killers such as High Blood Pressure and Diabetes.
Also commenting on the clinic, the Vicar’s wife, Mrs. Susan Davies expressed joy on the successful implementation of the project. She stressed the need for people particularly the over-weight to maintain regular medical check-ups.
“Health is wealth, without good health your money becomes worthless,” she stated.
Mrs. Davies who is also a health worker said though the Wellness Centre is established to attend to medical needs of the church members, there are future plans to extend the services to non-members. She also advised the members to get tested and know their HIV status.
“HIV/AIDS is real, know your HIV status, go for Test and Counseling,” she quipped.
The Health Project Team has advocated for strict adherence to some health tips such like avoiding risky sexual behavior, the use of tobacco and excess alcohol, managing stress, having adequate rest and relaxation, eating right and maintaining healthy body weight, practicing safety at home, on the move and at work, having a good relationship with God and periodic medical check-up.
