Vicar’s anger over TV cover-up of cross

By: Paolo Gallini, Religious Intelligence

A VICAR has complained after a TV crew covered up a cross while filming a church wedding for the Coronation Street soap opera.

The Rev James Milnes, of St Mary’s Church, Nether Alderley, Cheshire, has complained in his parish magazine that producers ordered the cross to be covered up in case it offended viewers. He wrote: “How can people think it offensive to see a cross in a church, in the same way as you would normally see the Koran in a mosque or the Torah in a synagogue? That is the emblem of this faith.”

A spokesman for Granada, which makes the show, said: “We are looking into how and why this happened. As Mr Milnes rightly says, we chose the church because the characters wanted a traditional religious church wedding. Covering up the cross was an error and we apologise for any upset.”
