Charity accused of encouraging teenage sex

By Matt Cresswell, Religious Intelligence

A Christian charity has accused a sexual advice charity of encouraging teenagers to have sex.

LIFE believes that a new campaign by the organisation Brook, which says ‘Have fun, be careful’ is irresponsible and could lead to an increase in teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

The Brook campaign was launched because statistically there is a boom in teenage conception rates during the months of December and January.

Michaela Aston, spokesperson for the charity LIFE, said: “Brook stands accused of specifically encouraging teenagers to have sex. In its latest poster campaign it tells young people to ‘have fun’, which, as is graphically clear from their depiction of condoms, means have sex.”

She added: “Every teenager wants to have fun, so when fun becomes synonymous with sex, which is how Brook defines it, then we can expect even more young people to engage in sex, get pregnant, have abortions and contract sexually transmitted infections (STIs), rates of which are already spiralling out of control.”

LIFE believes that sexual activity is at the heart of the problem of teenage pregnancies. They argue that a concerted effort to encourage youngsters to delay sexual activity is what is needed.

Ms Aston added: “It is also irresponsible to lull teenagers into a false sense of security about condoms. Condoms are not a magic bullet and are far from fail-safe with some estimates of failure as high as 15 per cent.”

LIFE is the UK’s leading provider of crisis pregnancy and post-abortion counselling.
