Saturday after Ash Wednesday – St. John Cassian, (Priest 435)
LITURGICAL THEME FOR THE DAY: John Cassian was a 5th century monastic saint known for his writings on the monastic life His feast day in the Orthodox Church is February 29 (celebrated on February 28 in non-leap years).
MEDITATION OF THE DAY: Paul is writing instructions to Titus on how to lead the community of faith ranging from what the Christian life looks like to what points tp stress in teaching (v.8) and how we should live (vv.3-7). He reminds each of us this season that we are saved by His mercy, reborn, renewed by the Holy Spirit and justified by His grace. His main emphasis is about the being and doing of good in contrast to debating, arguing, and controversy (vv.8-11). Because our past is settled (justified) and our future is secured (heirs), we should devote our present to doing good, with humility and love (something to consider especially for Anglicans). Today some questions to ponder in our reflection time are:
1) Is my life devoted to the being and doing good in the name of God?
2) Can this be the main theme of my life?
3) As citizens of the kingdom of God, how do we live while among the citizens of the kingdom of this world?
Paul and John Cassian both endeavored in their teaching to encourage those given to their care to show Christ’s grace to others, remembering what they once were apart from Christ. Perhaps their examples should encourage those of us in the church today to live in the light of that same mercy we have also been given.
PRAYER OF THE DAYLoving creator, I am not asking to overcome my weakness,
but to use it in some way to glorify you. Let me be aware of the many ways you reach out to help me today and let me stand in awe of the power that you use to build up the Kingdom through such a vessel like myself. Amen

Lenten Discipline – Are you looking for a chance to show how different the Christian life is? The Mutunga Challenge is trying to turn this tragic statistic (1 BILLION people live on a dollar a day or less) into a tool for raising awareness, for building a sense of community with the poor, and for raising funds for micro-credit development. The idea is that a household lives on a food budget of $2.00 a day, per person for a week. The money saved is then donated to The Mutunga Partnership. This idea doesn’t require finding extra cash – just a temporary change in lifestyle. It’s a challenge!
