Two Spanish lesbians to become the biological mothers of the same child

One will supply the genes while the other will carry the child.

Two Spanish lesbians, Toni Meléndez y María Ángeles Zucilla, are to be the biological mothers of the same child. It’s possible as one is supplying the genes while the other will carry the child.
It only needs an ovule from one of the women to be fertilised with sperm from an anonymous donor, and the resulting embryo to be placed in the uterus of the other woman.

The couple made an official request to have a child for whom both will be biological mothers, to the National Commission for Assisted Human Reproduction in Spain, a body which depends on the Ministry for Health as there is a legal loophole on the matter.

Público newspaper reports that there was a tense and long debate on the question before the permission was granted.
