Women Bishops Revision Committee to consider Statutory Transfer of Functions and Regulations

The Rt Revd Pete Broadbent, Bishop of WillesdenBy David Ould, Stand Firm

Pete Broadbent, suffragen bishop of Willesden and a prominent evangelical bishop in the Church of England (let’s face it, there’s not many of them) has twittered that tomorrow he will present a submission to the Revision Committee that, rather than a code of practice, actually legislates for a transfer of functions and regulations to another bishop.

i.e. dissenting parishes and clergy (on the question of women bishops) would have statutory protection and an alternate bishop to oversee them.

As Pete says:

We need to find a formula that will keep the CofE together.

I think I’m clearly on record as stating that the consecration of women bishops itself is the thing that’s pulling the CofE apart, but nevertheless this news is certainly to be welcomed. It will still leave conservative of both Anglo-Catholic and Evangelical persuasion marginalised, but at least it will protect them. Previously I had (over-optimistically) written:

We could ask that the code of practice actually becomes a leglislated measure, but it is unlikely to happen.

I think I was wrong. It needs to be legislated. We need protection.

Good luck Pete. You’re about to find out how liberal the liberals are!
