FIFTH THURSDAY OF LENT
Constantine II, King of Scotland, Martyr at Iona, 874

LITURGICAL THEME FOR THE DAY: . King Constantine was killed in a battle against heathen invaders of Scotland. In his last moments he repeated words echoing Psalm 27: "Lord Jesus, abandon not to beasts the souls that serve You." He was buried on Iona, where miracles took place at his tomb. Thereafter he was locally venerated for his martyrdom

MEDITATION OF THE DAY: When one considers martyrs such as the King of Scotland commemorated this day one cannot help but think of how serious and intentional he was about his baptismal covenant. Paul reminds us in the lesson from Romans that Israel failed in its covenant and as we near Holy Week pondering the covenants we made on Ash Wednesday would be worthy of our time. Has my faith deepened this Lent? Have I grown closer to God? Have I shed the Gospel of consumerism for the Gospel of Compassion and those around me? What acts have I undertaken that will allow me to celebrate the Easter season in a new way and more fully? Another point of view on our response is found in John’s Gospel John for today. As you know, it  employs the imagery of sheep and shepherding, with an emphasis on the relationship between words and deeds. The reaction of the folks then was mixed and so Jesus says His sheep hear His voice and follow Him; those who are not His sheep do not “hear” Him. This is the reason for the mixed reaction to His words. His sheep hear His voice, and they recognize in Jesus’ words and deeds the voice of the Good Shepherd.
.
PRAYER OF THE DAY:Lord, come to us: free us from the narrow mindedness of our world view and help us to remain faithful to  our covenant and live out a holy way of life, and guide us to the inheritance you have promised. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.
Lenten Discipline Create some much-needed silence by turning off radio off while driving your car, keeping the TV off after dinner, or taking a walk without your I-Pod player. You may be surprised by what revelations come to you in some regularly practiced quiet.
