Maine just became the fifth state to legalize ‘gay marriage’; the state’s governor had previously opposed ‘gay marriage’ and could have vetoed the bill. He did not – claiming a change of heart on behalf of ‘fairness’ – a change many appear to be making in these perilous days for marriage.

What well-intended politicians (and citizens) fail to realize is that ‘gay marriage’ demonstrates an ultimate lack of ‘fairness’. How? By messing with God’s purpose for His human creation. By sealing the delusion inherent in same-sex couples. And by undermining the most basic, important unit of civilization. Such ‘fairness’ serves injustice for generations to come. Kids require male and female. Period.

We who know better must persevere in this hour. New Hampshire hangs in the balance, as do other northeastern states. We must get tough. Will opposition to marriage strengthen us or discourage us? Let’s allow the battle to refine and sharpen our resolve.

Why is ‘gay marriage’ advancing so quickly? Let’s get wise and spring the trap:

Normalizing of Homosexuality: The media magnifies and honors all things homosexual. We are inundated with the myth that homosexual is normal and right. We who have come out of homosexuality (and those who know us) need to proclaim the truth of God’s design and mercy. How refreshing to proclaim how grace liberates captives unto the creativity of whole relating!

Distractions: The economic crisis, international unrest, a new president – America is focused elsewhere these days. That is just the distraction gay activists need to push through their agenda. People who care about marriage need to wake up and act before it’s too late. Isn’t upholding God’s image as important as the economy?

Political Expediency: Battered Republicans are now retreating from ‘gay marriage’ on the grounds that an unpopular ‘negative’ platform will hurt their chances of rebounding in the Obama era. So they are bowing out with Rick Warren and downplaying their resistance to ‘gay marriage’. Political cowardice, pure and simple. Gratefully, God stands above a political party; we partner with Him as prophetic, non-partisan agents by upholding His image in marriage.

‘Cool’ Christians: This is the biggest threat to marriage – educated, ‘relevant’ believers in our land who know the truth but who distance themselves from ‘gay marriage’ because they are too cool. They don’t want to be associated with the fallen Bush regime, James Dobson (e.g. ‘the religious right’), or fundamentalists whose heavy-handed tactics embarrass them.

This group confuses ‘cool’ with self-protection. These spiritual narcissists will probably allow ‘gay marriage’ to progress, and yet they have more potential than most to give an articulate answer to why marriage matters. Pray that many will repent and do so before it is too late.

Let’s pray, proclaim the truth, and spring the trap by upholding marriage. We persevere on behalf of generations-to-come who need the witness of a mother and a father.
