GAO ZHISHENG STILL MISSING, ALIVE BUT CONDITION UNKNOWN
Christian human rights attorney Gao Zhisheng was seized by a dozen police officers and last seen in public on February 4, 2009. Gao Zhisheng has been repeatedly kidnapped, arrested, imprisoned and tortured by Chinese authorities for defending the persecuted. He has been an unyielding voice for justice in the Chinese courts and was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008.
On October 29, 2009, a member of Mr. Gao’s legal defense team, Attorney Jiang Tianyong, joined five other legal defenders in Washington, D.C. in testifying before the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission on the treatment of human rights lawyers and the cases they defend in China. Mr. Jiang spoke openly about Mr. Gao, not allowing him to be forgotten—but Attorney Gao’s own voice continues to be silenced.
According to the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., Gao Zhisheng was allegedly tried in the Chinese courts, convicted of “crimes against the State,” and released on parole in early August, 2009. There is no public record of these events. A phone call to his brother confirmed Gao Zhisheng is still alive—but his whereabouts and condition are still unknown.
