FRIDAYThe Feast of St. Barbara

Today we consider the word of Amos who entered Hebrew history from among the shepherds of Tekoa” (a community in Judah).  Effectively, Amos had no authority beyond the words he uttered
, but his words were timely for them and for us. The powerful imagery of Amos’s statement, “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream” captures the core message that we need to consider: Life-giving worship of God and social justice are inseparable. The challenge for us is to do the same: Resist unjust social and religious practices, and base our resistance to the culture on Jesus’ example.

PRAYER:  Lord, save us from the temptations and distractions of this world. Come, protect us from all dangers  and lead us to salvation, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,  one God, for ever and ever.

Activity – On St. Barbara’s Day, you and your family can celebrate the feast of Saint Barbara with a crown cake to signify the crown of martyrdom and the crown of glory. If you are pressed for time, a gold-paper crown on a cake or a gumdrop crown is acceptable.

Ancient Wisdom/Present Grace :  He, therefore, who sets himself to act evilly and yet wishes  others to be silent, is a witness against himself, for he wishes  himself to be loved more than the truth, which he does not wish to  be defended against himself. There is, of course, no man who so  lives as not sometimes to sin, but he wishes truth to be loved  more than himself, who wills to be spared by no one against the truth” – St Gregory The Great – On Pastoral Care
