Out of their MIND? Why MIND’s shortlisting of Patrick Strudwick is of concern

By Phelim McIntyre, line in the sand

MIND, the mental health charity, announced the short list for Journalist of the Year. According to MIND this "highly respected award seeks to commend excellence in reporting on mental health issues." One of the nominees is Patrick Strudwick who wrote a controversial article in the Independent newspaper (Feb 2010) about Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE), more commonly but incorrectly called reparative therapy. To get this article Mr Strudwick posed as someone who wanted to leave the gay lifestyle and overcome what he claimed to be unwanted homosexual feelings. Patrick Strudwick is actually a gay activist who is a contributing editor at the Gay Times and before that at Attitude.

MIND has the following charitable objectives:

(a) To promote the preservation of mental health and to assist in relieving and rehabilitating persons suffering from mental disorder or conditions of emotional or mental distress requiring advice or treatment.

(b) To promote the study of and research into mental health disorder and emotional or mental distress and to obtain and make records of and disseminate information concerning the same and to educate the public in matters relating to mental health.

The inclusion of Patrick Strudwick's article is, I believe, in contravention of these guidelines and sets a dangerous precident.
