Sex is everywhere
by Marcia Segelstein for OneNewsNow
When I was a girl, I remember the women's magazines my mother would occasionally bring home from the supermarket. McCall's was my favorite, because it featured paper cut-outs for "Betsy," its trademark paper doll. In those days, it was understood that since women who were mothers would be buying the magazines, it made good sense to include something for children. And the idea of including material inappropriate for children probably never crossed the editors' minds.
Not so much now in our sex-obsessed culture.
This summer I had occasion to travel by plane with my family, including my teenage daughter. Before boarding, I ran to the newsstand to pick up a magazine to read on the trip. Looking hurriedly through the racks, it was hard to find anything remotely appealing. My eyes lit on Redbook, but it didn't take long to notice the cover headline: "28 Sexy Things to Try in Bed – He So Wants to Test These Out With You!" Even if I had still wanted to buy the magazine (which I didn't), how could I? What if my daughter innocently asked to look at it when I was done?
