The high profile case of Asia Bibi who faces death under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws has prompted renewed calls for legal and political reform
Asia, a farm worker, allegedly questioned the authority of the prophet Mohammed and has become the first woman sentenced to death by the Pakistani state for blasphemy.
Rachel Parry, USPG’s Regional Manager for Asia, explained that people from minority faith groups – including minority Muslim groups – are being targeted under the laws, which many believe are used to settle personal rather than religious grievances.
