EHRC now targets ‘gay-only’ guesthouses. Just in case any straight Christian fundamentalists were planning a night in one

By Ed West, Telegraph

[...]  That few other Tories have been condemning this law can only be due to a fear of being branded homophobic, but defending a citizen’s right to obey their conscience rather than over-zealous officials doesn’t mean you have to approve of their views. The Bulls did not violate the principle that a guesthouse should accept anyone. They did not turn away Preddy and Hall; they simply would not let them share a room, which from their point of view would have been assisting in immoral behaviour, little different from allowing guests to take drugs, drink alcohol or smoke (alas, in the latter case the Government no longer feels we are able to decide this for ourselves, either).

It was discrimination, and yet people discriminate all the time. Gay men are still discriminated against in many areas not on account of their sexuality but on account of their sex: there are taxis that refuse to allow men, babysitting customers who refuse to hire men and swimming pools which bar men at certain times. All of these cause just as much inconvenience, if not more so, than B&Bs that won’t take gay couples. In fact, in the age of the internet, where most hostelries advertise online, the inconvenience is minimal, and if one B&B does not take you, one down the road probably will (and, as Archer pointed out, why would you want to stay with people who disapproved of your existence? That’s not a holiday, that’s an awkward stay with elderly relatives you don’t like).
