Prime Minister writes to constituent on “Gay Marriage” Proposals

AM comment:  if love, equality and commitment are what counts, then allowing two gay or lesbian people to marry seems fair.   It also means that three (or more) gay or lesbian people, or bisexuals or heterosexuals, ought to be able to marry. Why insist upon two? Polyamory came out in Canada November 2011, thanks to a huge and largely successful BC Court Case; ITV featured 'out' poly people on its This Morning show, August 25, 2012. Polygamy has done the same, largely through the legal and media campaign of US polygamist Kody Brown.   How will Cameron respond to the polys?

The Prime Minister has written this letter to a constituent on "gay marriage" proposals

Dear xxx

Thank you for your email on gay marriage.

I know this is a contentious issue and there will be an important public debate about it. My view is that it is nontheless right to be having this debate and I support a change in the approach we take in this country.

Yes, as you say, it is about equality, but it is also about something else: commitment. I believe in the ties that bind us, that society is stronger when we make vows to each other and support each other. I firmly believe that is true whatever the sexuality of the couple.

I think we made an important breakthrough with civil partnerships that have allowed people to show this sort of commitment. As you know, we are also making it possible for those religious premises to carry out civil partnerships if they wish to do so. However, we have also made clear that those churches, mosques and synagogues who do not wish to take this approach should not be forced to do so.

The question is whether we want to go further and allow people who are gay to be married rather than just have a civil partnership. In my view, this is a right step to take forward but we will be consulting on this in March and I would encourage you to contribute to that discussion in due course.

Thank you again for taking the time to write,

Yours sincerely,

Signed David Cameron
