Stop Funding Terrence Higgins Trust (Updated)

A second petition concerning the Terrence Higgins Trust has been removed from the site after anonymous complaints to the Department that operates the petitions.  The only petition which remains is US based.  Read below why you should sign this petition.

NB: SINCE THIS PETITION WAS LAUNCHED THT HAS BEEN AWARDED YET MORE STATE FUNDING.

The Terrence Higgins Trust gets £10 million per year from the UK government to distribute "health advice". It is encouraged to target this advice at young people in the age group 14-19 but instead of health advice, it offers sickness advice. The sort of material and information it provides on websites such as "The Hard Cell", "Below the Belt" and "The Bottom Line" are more suitable for a hard-core porn site. They are physically and morally harmful. We call upon the UK government to stop funding perversion and to withdraw THT's charitable status.

The petition which appeared on AM’s website opposing public funding for the Terrence Higgins Trust is no longer available. We are unable to ascertain what has happened here, as no explanation has been forthcoming from its host, Avaaz. As the petition did not in any way contravene their terms and conditions as far as we can see, the only possible explanation can be that person or persons unknown have objected to the content – which was merely making public what was already on the Terrence Higgins Trust’s website – and Avaaz have capitulated and withdrawn the petition.  You will see above that a second Government petition has also now been removed, so our hope that the UK Government would not dismiss the concerns of its citizens so casually has proved to be unfounded.

There is a big difference between sex education andpornography – or there should be. The first should emphasize health and responsibility, focussing on what is normal and natural. The latter is free to tell and show what it likes to the world – but not to call it health advice!

There is also a big difference between an independent organization and a charity or a government-funded body. We are not advocating censorship. We just think that tax-payers' money should not go to groups that are providing young people in the 14-19 age group with nasty, abnormal and harmful models of behaviour.
