Justin Welby is made Archbishop of Canterbury at St Paul’s

Justin Welby has officially become Archbishop of Canterbury in a service held at St Paul's Cathedral.

The former Bishop of Durham completed all the necessary legalities to be confirmed into the post, in a service led by the Archbishop of York and overseen by the Provincial Registrar and a number of other legal officials.

Attending the service were many people who had worked with Justin Welby during his career, notable from the dioceses of Coventry, Liverpool and Durham.

As well as being a legal formality, the service contained readings, prayers, hymns and an anthem, as well as an address by the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu.

He told the new Archbishop that "life is found in simple things" and that "We can find happiness in solitude, but can only find joy in the company of others – we need the divine other to open our hearts."
